Can Exercises Cure My Torn Rotator Cuff And Labrum?

By:

Shoulder strengthening exercises will help to strengthen the rotator cuff and all the surrounding muscles needed for the proper functioning of the joint. Conservative rehabilitation depends on the size of the tear and the condition of the other structures in the joint. It is also important to answer these questions: Is the labrum intact? Is there degeneration, wear and tear of arthritis on the joint? How about the health of the joint capsule? If it's a complete tear, exercises won't help to heal the tear, but it will help strengthen the compensatory or surrounding muscles. To help the tissue heal faster or relieve pain, the following can be done: Massage with Ayurvedic Mahanarayan oil; detox and heal the joint; take Turmeric, Kaishore Guggulu, Magnesium, et cetera as a natural anti-inflammatory and pain and swelling reliever, and Ashwagandha to relieve pain and strengthen the muscles and joint.

What if the labrum has a tear and there is a tear in the rotator cuff, as well; can surgery be avoided?

It depends on the size of the labral tear and rotator cuff tear. It will depend on how long the person has had this problem and whether shoulder movement is restricted. It is important to know how much pain the individual has and whether he has had physical therapy treatment for the affliction. I would see a good physical therapist and see if the problem can be treated with conservative treatment first. See if the situation improves within 8-12 weeks. If there is no progress, surgery might be inevitable.

What about a six-by-seven-mm full thickness anterior midportion tendon tear and a non-displaced posterior labral tear; is there an alternative besides surgery?

A lot depends on the individual's activity level and age. A young person who want to stay active but has the abovementioned condition is definitely a good candidate for the surgery. This is partly because you don't want do beat up that joint and cause early arthritis of the joint. A torn piece of cartilage, labrum, or tendon can irritate the inside of the joint resulting in an inflammation.

Having said that, I have seen enough patients who can function well even with a complete tear. You can try physical therapy or acupuncture first and see if the joint starts to heal. Make sure you see a good orthopedist specializing in shoulder injuries and surgeries.
