Can Couriers Make Multi Stop Shipments?

By:

Most courier companies are capable of much more complex deliveries than simply picking up a package and dropping it off somewhere else. Many couriers are more like distribution logistics companies; they help their clients to come up with delivery solutions that can meet even the most complex problems. This certainly extends to helping clients find ways to make multi stop shipments.

When you have an idea about making a multi-stop shipment, the first thing you need to do is discuss your shipping vision with your courier company. This is important for two reasons. First, they will be able to tell you immediately whether or not what you have in mind is even possible. Secondly, they will be able to tell you whether or not there are ways that your initial plan can be improved. This is a very important function fulfilled by good courier companies, and the reason why you should always run ideas past them rather than simply dictating shipping policy. With their input, you may be able to reduce shipping times or decrease cost.

Multi stop shipments can also be arranged by ordering only specific types of courier service. There are certain types of service that you can order that give you essentially absolute control over the courier and everything that he does for that period of time. These types of services can give you the flexibility that you need to create very detailed multi stop shipments that meet your requirements exactly.

The types of services where this works are those where the only shipments a courier is making are for you. In the trucking world, this would be like when you hire an FTL courier. As long as a courier doesn't have to juggle other packages and clients, it is easy for them to accommodate any requests you have, including making multi-stop deliveries.

The other thing that you can do is hire a courier from a courier company to work only for your organization for a set period of time. Courier companies subcontract out drivers in this fashion all the time. This is a good way to arrange a multi stop delivery where you might not have enough cargo to justify hiring a truck like in FTL shipping. The advantage of either one of those methods is the control you receive though. You are totally free to dictate things like the route the driver takes or the order they make the deliveries in.
