Can Cold Case Stay Hot In The Ratings?

By:

One of the longest running crime series on TV is CBS's "Cold Case" which first hit our screens in September 2003 and has now run for six seasons, with a seventh starting in Fall 2009, but there was a strong indication towards the end of season six that the show may not be renewed. Rumor has it that it came down to a straight choice between renewing either "Cold Case" or "Without A Trace" with the latter losing out.

While I am a fan of both shows, I guess marginally I would prefer to continue seeing the "Cold Case" crew continue, if only for the music played in the background of the episodes. The show has become famous for the tracks chosen which are always from the year in which the cold case crime that the cast are investigating was carried out. Some fans, seeing the years in which the action is going to be set for future episodes, try to guess what songs from that year will be featured in the show, some with pretty accurate results!

Several episodes have featured the music of just one artist throughout, notably U2, Bruce Springsteen, Nirvana, Johnny Cash, and in a first, Pearl Jam provided the music for both episodes of the season finale of season six.

There has been some controversy about the show as the makers of the Canadian show "Cold Squad" which premiered some five years earlier than "Cold Case" claimed that the CBS show was a virtual copy of theirs, and to a lesser extent, the BBC's "Waking The Dead" which started in the year 2000 was also very similar.

Most of the current cast have been with the show since the first episode and the charismatic Kathryn Morris, as 'Detective Lilly Rush' has a great deal to do with the show's success. Her character's back-story with a drunken mother and an estranged father has provided interest outside of the murder cases she and her fellow cops investigate. Danny Pino's 'Scotty Valence' whose back-story has also been featured in the series, provides a chemistry with Rush while the humor in the show is often featured around Jeremy Ratchford's 'Nick Vera' whose love-life and somewhat slovenly habits provide light relief.

Whether the series can make it to seasons eight and beyond is open to question. With CBS undecided last season the show will probably have to come back with blockbuster episodes during the new season to recapture some of the audience it has been losing to give CBS a reason for extending its already long life.
