Can Chiropractic Treatment Help A Herniated Disc?

By:

Chiropractic care is an all encompassing science to help alleviate pain and correct postural malformations. In the event you have a pain in your low back and running down your legs you may have a lumbar herniated spinal disc. Sometimes referred to as sciatica, the cause of a herniated disc can be from long term wear and tear at the affected area or a traumatic injury usually due to a quick movement while bent over and lifting an object. Studies have shown that proper Chiropractic care is a recommended treatment to reduce the pain and help decrease the time it takes to heal.

A spinal disc herniation happens when the tough fibrous outer portion of the spinal disc tears and allows the softer inner portion of the disc to bulge out. Although incorrect, this is many times called a "slipped disc". As stated above it can happen suddenly or occur over time. The bulging of the inner disc material is usually out the back of the spinal column and towards one side or the other. Mostly found in the lumbar area, herniated discs can also be found in the cervical or thoracic spine as well.

It is believed that the bulging disc is putting pressure on the nerve and the pain is due to compression of the affected nerve. However, it is also believed that there are other factors involved that cause the pain so a multifaceted approach of Chiropractic care is the best course of action.

Initially, the treatment will focus on decreasing the pain as quickly as possible. Light traction may be one of the first orders of business followed by or in conjunction with cryotherapy. Electrical stimulation is also helpful in reducing the pain and preparing the way for more aggressive treatment. Some form of message therapy can also help decrease the muscle tightness, allowing relaxation in the area, further aiding in pain relief.

Once the pain has markedly subsided, the Chiropractic care will advance to spinal manipulation to help the spine to realign and allow the healing to improve more rapidly. The pressure of the disc on the nerve will be lessened and possibly alleviated entirely. Some of the above mentioned therapies may still be in use as well.

As the body heals physical therapy can strengthen the area to aid in preventing further discs to herniate. Studies have shown Chiropractic care to be just as or more effective than surgery. The choice is easy. A cold surgery room or a warm friendly Chiropractic office?
