Most families have been hit by the loss of loved ones to cancer. Anything that can assist in the prevention of this disease could help ourselves and our families. Following the scientific advice could benefit a great number of people.

What does the research say we should do?

We already know about some of the advice... To use olive oil, eat fruit and even more veg, particularly dark coloured varieties in the battle against becoming a breast cancer casualty.

Whole grain foods are a big part of a breast cancer prevention diet. Six to seven portions per day are advised. Included should be once slice of bread, one pitta, half a bagel, one ounce of breakfast cereal/uncooked rice/pasta and three ounces of potatoes.

Four to five servings of fat (1 serving = 1 tablespoon) is advised each day with olive oil being 3 of those servings. Other servings could come from two tablespoons of nuts/sunflower seeds/pine nuts, one tablespoon of peanut butter, one quarter of an avocado or four ounces of stoned olives.

The research adds that two servings per day of dairy products should be included in your anti breast cancer diet. One serving counts 1cup/225ml skimmed milk, one large egg, 1oz/25g hard cheese, 4oz/100g cottage cheese or 1/2 cup/125 ml yoghurt.

Very little meat should be eaten with just 12 ounces of white meat of fish each week and 6 ounces of red meat each month which would replace the same weight of meat/fish. These amounts are greatly reduced from most people's weekly levels.
