As per the statistics in 2009, over 64% people in USA and 48% in Europe are suffering from excess weight. What is the main reason for being overweight? What causes the body build up excess fat? So, calories explained in a nutshell.

What is calorie that is to blame for all excess weight unhappiness? Calorie is rather a measurement than the tangible thing like many think of it. It is just the measurement of energy we consume with every food and our body cannot survive without that energy. That energy moves our muscles, heart and other vital organs which in turn make it possible for us to live.

With every food that we eat or beverage that we drink we gain enough calories to support our organism in working order. Calories mainly exist in four types of food that are fat, carbohydrates, sugar and protein.

There is a certain amount of calories needed daily to sustain our bodies in working order. Whenever that amount is more than the daily norm we start building excess fat as the extra calories convert to fat. That is the main reason of becoming gradually overweight. In order to lose weight we need to pay attention to the amount of the calories that we intake with the food. The basic principle of the weight loss is minimizing that amount of the calories so that the body starts to consume the deposited fat and the person starts to lose weight.

I must note that besides calories other factors which greatly influences the extra weight building are genetics, medical pill side effects as well as long time inactivity due to health problems. Almost 30% of people suffer from the overweight problems because of the heredity only.

As a conclusion we must always remember that the basic solution to losing extra weight is minimizing the calories intake which is quite affordable thing to do.
