Calming Your Dog During A Storm With The Anxiety Wrap For Dogs

By:

During the many years I have been working with, around and beside dogs, I have seen several different categories and levels of anxiety in dogs. There are plenty of methods to use in helping to calm your dog's out-of-control stress. One possible means of calming your dog is to use a body wrap or anxiety wrap for dogs, which I will discuss in this article.

One type of stress is due to anticipating pain, such as the anxiety brought on by the fear of nail clippers, possibly because a nail was clipped too short once, cutting into the quick which is painful.

There is also a type of anxiety over being left alone, otherwise known as separation anxiety. There can be several levels of this stress, from simply pacing and barking to trashing everything in its path trying to get back to the "pack".

Lightening storms can precipitate hysteria in otherwise calm dogs to the extent of sending them blindly crashing through sliding glass doors, hiding under beds, panting, trembling and totally inconsolable or even running frantically for miles.

Being confined in a moving vehicle may also trigger irrational stress in dogs, possibly because a previous car ride was traumatic. They might have been thrown off balance around a turn or during a quick stop. That's why crating a dog in a vehicle is always a good safety measure.

Knowing why a dog reacts with panic to a specific situation is really not as important as helping your dog overcome that debilitating fear.

One approach to calming a dog during a "panic attack" is by implementing a tool called an anxiety wrap for dogs or body wrap. The principle behind this tool has been promoted and documented in great depth by Temple Grandin, who developed a "hug box" using the same idea of calming pressure on the body. Because of her autism, Temple's over-sensitivity to touch brought on debilitating anxiety, yet while at her aunt's ranch as a teen-ager she observed the calmness of a cow while in a squeeze chute for handling. She decided to make a similar safe confinement for herself. Temple came to realize that her body and mind were calmed by the deep touch pressure of the adjustable box. She also found that her over-reactive senses were then focused to a plateau that was manageable.

The anxiety wrap for dogs uses this method by way of a body shirt that applies deep pressure on the nervous system for a soothing effect. This alternative and holistic approach to behavior modification can help in easing your dog's hyperactivity in many situations, including thunderstorm terror and separation anxiety.

It is extremely essential that when ordering any type of anxiety wrap you measure your dog accurately to experience the desired effects. If the body wrap is too tight, it will only produce irritation and discomfort for your dog. Not putting it on snug enough could also irritate your dog and not induce enough deep touch pressure to have a calming effect. So measuring your dog correctly is very important. The way to do this is by measuring your dog in a standing position around the girth area, which is the fullest part of the ribcage, with a cloth or vinyl measuring tape. Pull it snug, but not too tight, and don't round off the measurement. Be exact in your measuring.

The anxiety wrap for dogs is a great tool in helping your dog achieve balance, focus, self-confidence, and relaxation. That being said, not every dog in every stressful situation will benefit from the anxiety wrap, just as nothing will work in every situation for a total population of people or animals. You might also notice that it does not entirely cure your dog's irrational panic, but may lessen it to a manageable degree. It also might take several uses of the wrap to gain its full potential. Some dogs seem to be effected instantly. Some take a little more time to experience the desired sedative effect and others don't seem to benefit at all by the body wrap.

The goal is to use whatever healthy methods you can to try and help your dog overcome its irrational stressful state. If this doesn't work for your dog, there are other options such as massage, desensitization, homeopathic medications, aromatherapy, and more.

The important thing is that you not give up on finding a way to help your dog lessen its response to the anxiety issues that are wreaking havoc not only for your dog, but also for you. Trying something such as an anxiety wrap for dogs may be a very affordable way to ease both you and your dog's anxiety level and readjusting your dog back to a healthy balance of mind and body.
