Call It What You Want, It Is Still Barbecue Sauce

All over the globe there are many different sauces used to grill meats. Ultimately whatever you call it, however you say it, or whatever it tastes like, they are all barbecue sauces. From the chimi-churri sauce of South America, the Teriyaki sauces of Japan, the Hoisin Sauce of China, or the multitude of variations here in America such as the South Carolina mustard sauces or the sweet tomato based sauces of St. Louis and Kansas City, they all have one thing in common, to make our meats taste great.

Chimi-churri sauce is a parsley based green sauce most often seen in Argentina and Uruguay, as well as other places in South America. This sauce has made it's way north as far as Mexico and is used as a condiment, a marinade, and a barbecue sauce. There is a red variation of this sauce as well.

Teriyaki sauce is a sweet soy sauce concoction from Japan and has expanded into many variations in recent times. You can find a multitude of Teriyaki sauces that are excellent for use as a marinade as well as a barbecue sauce. In Japan, fish is more often used with this sauce, while in the west chicken, pork, and sometimes beef is more often the choice of meats.

Hoisin Sauce is a Chinese invention that is also called Haixian sauce. It is used in many dishes including Mu Shu pork, spring rolls, and barbecued pork. This type of barbecue sauce is most common in Cantonese variety of Chinese cooking. It is a sweet potato based sauce that can also be used for basting chicken and as a dipping sauce.

The mustard sauce, most common in South Carolina, can date back to the German settlers of the region. It is one of many American barbecue sauce varieties, and is very distinct for it's respective area. Other regions in America, such as Kansas City, use the most common tomato based sweet sauces that are placed on the meat near the end of cooking. Many of these sauces can be used as dipping sauces or condiments as well.

No matter where you go in the world you will find someone grilling some kind of meat over open flames or coals, and adding some sort of barbecue sauce as well. No matter what the ingredients or flavor variety is your choice, you will find that so many of these sauces are incredibly delicious and versatile as well.
