California Personal Injury Lawyers Discuss Auto Safety For Children

By:

California personal injury lawyers know that the most heartbreaking accidents involve children. The need to keep children safe at all times is why there are laws requiring children in California to be either restrained in car safety seats, booster seats or buckled up. While parents may take great steps to protect their children, there may be other dangers lurking inside and outside the car that you may not be aware. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a special page for child passenger safety, and it includes several risks that parents may not be aware of

Backovers

Backover accidents kill and seriously injure dozens of children every year. However, these incidents don't receive much attention. A backover accident involves a car backing out of a driveway and over a child. In these accidents, the driver is unable to see the child, and this typically involves little children who walk into the path of a vehicle that is backing up. Prevent these accidents by teaching children not to play around cars, and supervising them. Before starting your car, take a walk around and check if there are kids. Look behind as you back up, and be extra careful when you drive an SUV because you are more likely to miss a child in these cars.

Power Windows

Injuries related to power windows have been a source of concern for California personal injury lawyers for a while now. Never leave your kids alone in the car, and teach them not to play with window switches or stand on the door armrest. Make sure your children's hand, feet and head are away from windows before raising them.

Vehicle Rollways

These accidents are caused when a child moves the gear selector, shifting your car's automatic transmission out of "park". Preventing such accidents involves careful supervision of children. Teach them not to play when they are inside the car, and never leave your keys in the car.

Seatbelt Entanglement

Children may become entangled if they pull the seatbelt all the way out, and wrap it around their head, neck or waist. Make sure your kids are properly restrained, and teach them not to play with seatbelts. Make sure that unused seats are buckled.

Trunk Entrapments

These accidents occur when children play around cars and make their way into the trunk. If they manage to lock themselves in, they can quickly suffer from a heat stroke because temperatures inside the trunk can rise quickly. Supervise kids carefully, and lock trunks and doors. Make sure keys are not within reach of your kids.

Heat Stroke or Hyperthermia

These incidents are often caused when occupants leave their children inside the car to run an errand, or pick up something. Temperatures inside the car can rise, causing heatstroke. Children can die in a hot car. They may be unable to open the car before being overcome by hyperthermia. Never leave your children alone inside a car, or even in a parked vehicle.
