California Benefits: Who Are The Eligible Claimants?

In California, the state benefits law provides 12 programs that would help poor families, disabled individuals, and displaced workers pay for their basic needs such as food, medicine, shelter, and clothing.

These are the 12 state programs and their respective definitions according to GovBenefits.gov:

1.California CalWORKs this is a welfare program that provides poor families with financial assistance and allows them to pay for their basic needs. Eligible claimants include California residents or legal immigrants who are underemployed (receiving low salary) or those who are about to lose their jobs.
Also, pregnant women or parents taking care of a child age 19 years and below can also receive this assistance as long they can prove they have limited income.

2.California Food Stamp this program provides food for low-income families. However, it does not cover all their food rations.

3.California Head Start this program provides financial assistance to elementary school children that will allow them to finish their studies. Being a child-centered program, this also provides job opportunity for parents to allow them to support their families.

4.Healthy Families this is a low-cost insurance program that provides children and teenagers with health, vision, and dental coverage. However, eligible individuals should not be covered by other insurance policy and should not qualify for Medi-Cal program.

5.Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) this program allows low-income families to live in a decent house with insulation or heating system. The LIHEAP also pays for the housing repair and energy-efficient systems.

6. Medi-Cal this is the states medical health program for children and adults from low-income families.

7.School Breakfast and Lunch Program this feeding program provides one-third of the daily nutrients of elementary and high school students.

8.Special Milk Program this is a federally-funded program that provides schools and agencies with milk at a low price. The government has ensured that the milk in this program is rich in calcium and complete with essential vitamins and minerals which are important for the childrens developing body.

9.Special Supplement Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) this provides health information and food for low-income pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, children, and people who are at-risk in malnourishment and illnesses.

10. Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) this program, which operates during summer or during school breaks, provides food for young children and teenagers.

11.Weatherization Assistance Program this program is for low-income Californians who need to repair their houses and have energy-efficient system to live comfortably inside their dwellings.

12. Unemployment Insurance Benefits this program provides temporary financial assistance for displaced workers who lost their jobs due to layoffs and restructuring. Meanwhile, eligible beneficiaries should not be at fault for their termination.

To qualify, unemployed employees should have worked for the past 12 to 18 months and should earn enough funds while they were still working.
