California, Home Of The Great American Burger Joint

By:

I dont consider myself a foodie by any means. In fact, Im not even comfortable using the word foodie and Im really uncomfortable around those who identify themselves as such. I get the same feeling around these people as I do around people who act like their cats are human children. Theres something missing there and Im not sure I want to stick around long enough to find out what that is. But heres the catch, I do love to eat food. It is almost exclusively what I enjoy eating. Food, that is.

Just shy of the Fear Factor menu, I will try anything once. And I usually give things a second and third chance as well. I may not have the most refined palette, but in my near 30 years of food consumption, I have learned a few hard fastened rules (more like wide generalizations). For example:

The best pizza comes from the east coast and the best burgers come from the west coast.

You want a slice I recommend flying to New York City. If you want a burger, skip on down to southern California. I understand that since this is the Internet, and you may be hungry now, that you might not have time to get to these respective locations any time you want a burger or slice. That is unfortunate. What if I were to tell you a couple of my favorite California burger places, and if you happen to find yourself in the vicinity of said places, you can drop in and see for yourself how right I am? Deal? Alright. This is by no means a comprehensive list of the best burger joints in California, just the ones Ive been to and enjoyed. So without Freddy Ado

1) In-N-Out, Many Locations, CA.

What would an obvious list of California burger places be without the most obvious of the obvious In-N-Out. You cant go wrong with In-N-Out, always consistent, simple, and delicious. I always go with the double-double (two patties w/cheese) animal style (secret sauce w/chopped grilled onions). The only downside for me is their fries are pretty bland and flimsy. If you must have fries, go with animal-style fries to spice them up.

2) Malibu Inn, Malibu CA.

The Malibu burger is delicious. I dont know what they do to the beef, but it works. Probably even better than the burger is the atmosphere of the Malibu Inn. Im pretty sure it has been around since the 1920s, it is a legendary Malibu restaurant and in the evening it hosts some of the best rock in town. Its located across the street from the Malibu Pier, so that doesnt hurt either.

3) Rockys Crown Pub, Pacific Beach, CA.

The only items on the menu are burgers and fries (choice of 1/3 lb. or 1/2 lb. burgers) with or without cheese (American or Swiss). Good luck trying to get a seat during NFL Sundays. Its worth shuffling in like the cattle the burgers are made of to get a taste of these burgers. It doesnt hurt that youre in Pacific Beach, either. Southern California has some beautiful locations; this is one of them.

4) Volcano Burger, Los Alamitos, CA.

Dont let the name scare you, their volcano sauce isnt that spicy at all, but it is delicious. Big and juicy (starting to be a pattern, I know) and I like how they used shredded lettuce instead of the big leaf. They also dont skimp on the fresh cut fries, which I highly recommend. Go with the Colossal Burger if you are really hungry.

5) Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Many Locations, CA (Originally Arlington, VA)

I know this kind of puts a damper on my west coast burgers being the best theory, but there is an exception to every rule. Plus, Five Guys is now located in over 40 states including multiple locations in California. Five Guys feels like a California burger joint. I love everything about this place. A huge bonus, on top of their incredible burgers and ample serving of fresh cut fries is an array of toppingsincluding bacon, the king of toppings. They also have those huge bins of peanuts to snack on while you wait. Love a restaurant with peanut shells on the floor, not sure why, but I do.

6) Fatburger, Many Locations, CA.

Fat Burger is exactly what it sounds like; a big, fat, juicy burger. Partly owned by Magic Johnson and other celebs, Fatburger is a solid choice any day of the week. Understandably, Fatburger is often avoided by anyone on a diet. It should be obvious, no matter what the burger joint is called, that a cheeseburger isnt exactly a healthy option, but for some people a fat burger by any other name is not as fattening. I personally consider Fatburger a Poor Mans Five Guys, but thats still a pretty good burger.

7) Breas Best Burgers, Brea, CA

A must have if you ever find yourself in Brea, these burgers are always consistent and the vegetables are always fresh. I highly recommend trying the avocado bacon cheeseburger. Like I said, fresh tasty veggies always. Great fries and that mom n pop buirger shop feel.

Well, thats my list. I hope you found it useful. If you have any recommendations for me, Im always looking for a good burger. And if you disagree with any of my recommendations here, well, Ill give you a refund on this article. The food though, must be paid for.
