Calibrate Your Laptop Battery

Calibrate Your Laptop Battery

By:

Its time to calibrate laptop battery, if you find your notebook is not performing to its maximum limits. Laptop batteries have a microprocessor that gives you an estimate of your battery capacity during the process of charging and discharging. Batteries have to be re-calibrated once in a while to ensure an accurate onscreen percent display and obtain maximum efficiency of the battery.

How to Calibrate Your Battery?

The capacity of your notebook battery cannot be altered easily. With time and usage, it loses its power as a result of chemical reactions occurring inside the battery. These changes cannot be reversed. In several laptops, the onscreen display of the battery is inaccurate. It might warn you that you have 3 minutes of power left when actually it has 20 minutes. When you calibrate laptop battery, the meter will be corrected to read exactly the existing condition of your battery.
Instead of laptop battery replacement, you can attempt to extend the battery life by recalibrating it. This can be done by charging the laptop battery until it is full and let it remain for 2 hours on full charge. Afterwards unplug the laptop and lower the screen brightness or set the power control settings to never turn off. Allow your laptop to be in this state for 5 hours. Then charge it once again to its full. By following this, a more precise depiction of your laptop battery capacity can be seen and you can avoid a laptop battery replacement.

Can Laptop Batteries be repaired?

The majority of todays laptop batteries have lithium-ion batteries. While you can easily purchase nickel-based cells, lithium-ion cells are not usually available as manufacturers sell them to authorized dealers only. If the battery cells are weak, it is economically wise to go for cell replacement.
Under normal conditions, a lithium-ion battery lasts for 2 to almost 3 years. With usage and time, the capacity of the battery reduces due to cell oxidation. When the battery reaches a point that it cannot perform, then you need to go in for laptop battery repair which is possible by replacing the affected cell. Nonetheless, you should ensure that the replaced cell matches the others. If the battery is worn out, restoring its capacity is not viable. Therefore, laptop battery repair can only be achieved partially. Heating a battery can sometimes temporarily improve its working condition.
