The Cabbage Soup Diet is a controversial weight loss approach advising an exclusive consumption of a low-calories cabbage soup over a period of seven days. Inspiring many immitators using similar principles, it claims to produce weight loss results of 10 lbs in a week.

Cabbage Soup Recipe

6 Large onions (green)
2 Peppers (green)
1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)
3 Carrots
1 Container (10 oz. or so) Mushrooms
1 bunch of celery
1 half head of cabbage
1 package soup mix (Lipton)
1 or 2 cubes of bouillon (optional)
1 48oz can tomato juice (optional)
Season with salt, pepper, curry, garlic powder, parsley
The Plan

Day One- Cabbage Soup and as much fruit as you want, except bananas.
Day Two- Cabbage Soup and vegetables including one potato with a little butter.
Day Three- Cabbage Soup and fruit plus vegetables, except potatoes and bananas.
Day Four- Cabbage Soup and up to eight bananas and unlimited skim milk.
Day Five- Cabbage Soup and up to 20 ounces of beef and as many as six tomatoes.
Day Six- Cabbage Soup and all the beef and vegetables as you want (no potatoes).
Day Seven- Cabbage Soup and brown rice, vegetables (no potatoes) and unsweetened fruit juice.

Pros

Quick Weight Loss: If you have a wedding, or high school reunion to go to in the next week or so, and you need to fit into that dressthis might be ok to try.
Cons

Unsustainable: There is no way of keeping up this diet in the long term, and isnt long term weight loss what were all after?
Could Make You Fatter: Research shows that we tend to store calories more efficiently after periods of starvation. I.E. You lose 10lbs this week but gain 12lbs in the next two.
Bottom Line

This is a starvation diet plain and simple. It might take off a couple pounds in the short term but it will surely hurt you in the long run, and will likely add pounds rather than take them away, by messing with your bodys metabolism. What works in the long term is a sensible balanced eating plan, focusing on portion control and moderate exercise.
