CMS Skills in demand

By: marcashton

When I originally launched the CMS blog it was largely as a resource to try and exchange some ideas on Content Management Systems and the changing technology demands. The more I've learnt on the subject the more I believe that the subject is becoming a dedicated subject and skills set for both publishing and IT professionals.

The blog itself got off to a slow start but the interest in the subject has produced some nice repeat traffic which we have been able to monetise to some extent.

Being in the publishing industry a number of job adverts also cross my desk. Even in a country like South Africa where the landscape is dominated by a handful of large electronic publishers, a number of the writing, content and IT positions demand CMS skills. If you are planning to be in online publishing then equipping yourself (and staying current) with the technology gives you a good head start over your competition. Writing skills are important but publishers themselves also want to look at people who can help them serve and distribute their content in the most efficient ways - if you can fill this space you become instantly more valuable.

Being a small publisher I have had quite lot of time to look at the way that publishers react to technology - I have become increasingly surprised at how little interest publishers show in their CMS skills. The general answer is "we outsource to our web development firm and they will handle it".

Whatever.

Your CMS is your lifeblood and your interface to your clients. You need to intimately understand it and be able to interpret the data it is sending to you and ensure that your product is flexible across all browsing platforms.

The message is clear - understand your CMS and stay current if you want to be an effective role player in the publishing industry.
