Buying Your Very First Sideboard

By:

Your dining table has been lonely for some time. All of your fancy dinnerware has been living side by side with your everyday flatware and dishes, & is no longer fancy. You have marveled at the ease at which a friend or neighbor or family member has been able to set the table with specially bought fancy dinnerware and would like to join the club, but you have nowhere to keep it.

Sideboards might not be something you have spent much time thinking about, but these wonderfully versatile pieces of dining furniture are just the thing to take your entertaining to the next level. Drawers can hold your silverware safely, whilst cupboards can hold your 'best' crockery & glasses. The top is the perfect place to display a vase of flowers or beautiful table lamp, & just perfect for glasses, ice buckets & nibbles when guests arrive.

If you're not familiar with them don't worry, purchasing your first sideboard doesn't have to be as intimidating as it sounds. There are a few basic rules that you need to remember when purchasing a new sideboard. While you may think of style as the first and most important consideration, you may have other limitations that prevent you from buying a very long or very tall sideboard.

Think of the potential locations you want to place your sideboard. Measure them out so you have the proper information while shopping. Check the amount of room you will need for foot traffic, and be sure to measure out how far chairs need to be pulled out so your guests and family members can get in and out of their seats with ease. If you are using it to hold glasses, nibbles & ice buckets for pre dinner drinks it will need to be accessible.

Function is also very important. You may want to display some of your finest china and you may want a sideboard with a display, or you may be content with a floral arrangement that is framed well by a window in your dining room. You may have a desire to buy new dinnerware and fill up a large sideboard, or look for a small sideboard to hold just a few things.

Style is also important to consider. You may want to look at modern designs that can compliment any dining room style. A sleek, black sideboard can compliment most styles, and a white sideboard could also fit into your style. There are many materials and finishes to consider as well. Lacquer finishes can come in glossy or matte and can bring out elements of style in your dining room you may not have realized you even had!

It's best that the sideboard complement your other dining furniture. It doesn't need to match but it needs to be complementary in colour & finish, as well as design. Size is important too, if you only have a small dining table buying a huge, chunky, dark wood sideboard should probably be avoided.

When shopping for your new sideboard, bring a friend or family member to help you find what you need and help you choose what you want. You may be shopping online and want to have all of your measurements and requirements written down next to you for easy reference. Good luck and happy shopping!
