Buying Your First Aid Kit Vs. Building One

By:

Honestly many people when they realize that they need or want a first aid kit simply go to the store and purchase one. When shopping around for a first aid kit you will very likely realize that each first aid kit seems to be missing one or more essential item and the only way to get all the first aid items you feel you need is to purchase an over sized first aid kit that also contains a large number of items that you will never, ever use.

The best first aid kits are those that individuals create themselves because they tend to be smaller and more condensed with only those items you are likely to really need. Of course, putting together a first aid kit isn't cheap but if you build one from scratch you are likely to have more of the items you will need and can fill it with items that are worth their weight in a gold during an emergency.

To begin with every first aid kit should contain bandages. Several Band-Aids of different sizes, a roll of gauze, and a lengthy ace bandage with clasps. These are very flexible items that you will find you can use in a number of ways. You will also want to have some blood coagulant, Neosporin, an ice pack, and some sort of antiseptic to clean a wound, plus one bottle of water and a box of baking soda. Smelling salts can be helpful to keep in your bag of tricks as well as a mouthpiece and instructions for performing any emergency first aid procedures. Whenever a rescue inhaler and epinephrine pen are available these items should be included as well.

Creating your own first aid kit allows you to get creative and this is very true in protecting your kit contents. If you keep the kit within a short distance of your whereabouts it can get damage by the elements such as water, dust and etc.. A remedy for this is a resealable plastic container or you can simply use a Ziploc bag that is both easy to get and very inexpensive and does a great job at protecting.

No one is immune to being overwhelmed in an emergency and all the more reason to have a emergency handbook manual handy to quickly get past temporary forgets and move on to helping who ever is in need in an emergency. Staying calm and calling for help is essential and can often make a huge difference in the outcome of a crisis. The advance planning and quick thinking does save lives.
