Buying Tires - How To

By:

How safe you are in your vehicle will come down to a number of factors, one of these factors is the quality of your tires and how well maintained they are. With good tires you can boost the fuel efficiency or your car, have a more comfortable ride and enjoy better traction on various road surfaces and in different weather conditions.

However if you don't know much about car maintenance and tires it can be daunting when you head to a tire store when faced with the massive amounts of choice, sizes, types and ratings. In order to help you understand the process of buying new tires better we have compiled a short list of things you look out for.

Firstly you need to be sure that your current tires need replacing. Look at your current tires and determine if they are still in reasonable condition. If the tires are bulging, discolored, cracked, damaged or are badly worn you will need to buy some new ones.

When exposed to oxygen rubber starts to deteriorate, so even if after the inspection your tires seem to be in reasonable condition, if you have had them for more than 10 years you should change them anyway.

Secondly you should look to the quality of your car. If your tires are becoming worn in an irregular fashion it could be an indication that you have a problem with your suspension or wheel alignment. If the tires seem to be worn more on the inside or the outside instead of evenly across, then you need to get your car serviced.

Simply replacing the tires will just cost you money and not solve the issue, you need the suspension and wheel alignment to be looked at. Fresh tires will simply wear in exactly the same way and you will be forced to once again buy more.

When you go to a tire center they will more often than not inspect your current tires for signs such as this anyway. Although to be safe you should ask your regular mechanic who you trust to give the car a once over for you, bear in mind the tire center will be likely trying to sell you new tires no matter what.

Thirdly you should always check the information placard and owners booklet. Within the owners booklet and on the information placard you will likely find information from the manufacturer referring to which kind of tires are best suited for the vehicle.

All vehicles need to have an information placard attached by law, it will either be inside your trunk lid, inside the door or inside the glove compartment. A car that has undergone a few paint jobs may be hiding the placard underneath a coat of paint.
