Buying The Right Kitchen Worktops

By:

Deciding to revamp your kitchen is exciting however is likely to leave you facing a number of decisions, predominantly, what style are you looking for and how much can you afford to spend on it? Finding the perfect kitchen is all well and good as long as the logistics match up. The kitchen worktops you choose will totally change the face of the room and it's important to get the right mix of practicality and style.

A number of factors will determine your choice of kitchen worktops, including colour, material, style and cost. Depending on how you use your kitchen may also need to be a consideration. If your kitchen worktops are used throughout the day, by the entire family constantly preparing meals and snacks, with hot pans, sharp knives and liquids spilling all over the kitchen surfaces, a worktop that scratches and stains easily probably isn't the best choice. If however, your kitchen is more of a showroom than a kitchen, then you may be more swayed by something more stylish and less in need of protection and practicality.

Granite is a popular material used for crafting kitchen worktops. Often purchased in black but also available in colourful shades, including green, blue, red, brown, grey and white, it's flexibility makes it complementary and suitable for an array of different kitchen styles.

Granite kitchen worktops are low maintenance and can be wiped down with a damp cloth and a little detergent. They are also resistant to high temperatures, scratches and water. However highly acidic or alkaline liquids, if left, will mark granite therefore it's important to wipe down spills immediately to avoid this occurring.

Because it is a natural material, it oozes style, positioning it in a higher price bracket than other kitchen worktops available. However the investment will leave you with a long-standing, durable and extremely high quality set of kitchen worktops.

Corian is another popular material for kitchen worktops. It is a frequent choice because it can be formed into any shape without requiring joins or seams. Available in a wide selection of colours, corian worktops are stylish and practical. The smooth water and stain resistant surface means there are no unhygienic seams to trap food and dirt.

It's resistance of heat up to about 250 degrees celsius, means you don't have to worry about hot pans marks and any spillages can simply be cleaned up easily. Because of these impressive qualities, corian kitchen worktops can also come at a premium but again, are great quality and will be sure to stand the test of time.

For those looking for a material that offers value, style but not necessarily an extortionate price tag, Wood is an excellent option. Its versatility and availability in so many different styles, such as oak, beech, maple, cherry and teak help to make it a hugely popular option. Wooden kitchen worktops add warmth to a room and are perfect for rustic and country styles.

Another natural material, wood tends to get better with age and the knots and markings can give an individual appearance. Wood can be stained to any colour to match any kitchen and is incredibly practical. Certain spillages can stain lighter woods so it's important to wipe everything up immediately. Any scratches can be sanded off and the work tops re-oiled to correct a damaged finish.

Those on a tighter budget may instead be tempted by Laminate. It's the cheapest option for kitchen worktops and best of all, is available in many different colours and finishes. It's an easy surface to mop up however lighter colours can also stain, so must be mopped up immediately. Laminate worktops can also be prone to heat damage and scratching but repair kits can be bought to cover scratches. The thicker the laminate, the more durable it will be.

Whichever kitchen worktops you decide to fit, make sure they will stand the test of time and serve your cooking and preparation requirements, as well as meeting all your style needs.
