What we are going to discuss today is the anatomy of a cigar.
As we go through our series we are going to discuss many aspects
of a cigar but lets start right from the very beginning and lets
talk about the cigars anatomy.

Most people just from looking at a cigar have an idea of what it
is. But right from the get go Ive been out many nights and have
seen people see it exactly wrong or just not understand the basics
of a cigar. Just so you dont fall into that little bit of
awkwardness while sitting next to someone who really knows cigars
this is what you really need to know.

The foot of the cigar is what you are going to light and thats
normally the opening that has been either shaved or already been
cut. Now the cap is going to be the other end that needs to be
clipped, punched, poked, scissored or wedged. Now we will go
through 3 of those that I suggest and dont need to really go
further then that but we will discuss in the next video series
when we talk about cutting the end of the cigar.

The anatomy of a cigar is also what is in it. The cigar is made
up of 3 layers, the filler, the binder and the wrapper. Lets
talk about each one individually. The filler is made out of the
top part of the tobacco plant its called the ligero part of the
plant. Normally the strongest part of the tobacco plant.
The binder is meant to actually hold the filler together and
causes the tobacco in the cigar to actually draw very nicely
through it. The binder is made from the volado leaf which is
the bottom part of the plant and closest to the ground and has
the tendency to allow the tobacco when its bonded around the
filler to draw very evenly.

The outer wrapper is the one that is the most important. When it
comes to the taste of your cigar its going to be 80-90% of the
taste of your cigar comes specifically from the wrapper. The
outer wrapper is also called the capa which the Cubans would call
it. It is the wrapper that is seen and is most distinguishing so
its going to be the wrapper on the entire plant and has the least
amount of visible defects and the best taste of the entire tobacco
plant.

If we were making a comparison to cake the icing would be the
wrapper and the cake itself would be the binder and the filler.
Now when you are eating a cake what do you taste most of?
Well your definitely tasting the icing the most but you like that
inside. Just so you understand that is the basic anatomy of the
cigar.
