Buying Office Products

One challenge many small business owners face is deciding what technology is needed to get a growing business off the ground. What computers are appropriate? Desktops or laptops? Does the model make a difference? What about warranties? In this brief article I will address these questions in regards to office computers, providing a high-level overview of the options, and some general advice.

Be sure to minimize glare from overhead lights, desk lamps and windows by arranging your workspace accordingly.

Also, remember the store where you purchased your computer does not always do warranty work during the first year, instead you may have to ship it directly to the manufacturer. In general, extended warranties cover electronics [things you can't see]. They don't usually cover physical damage. Most extended warranties have large gray areas, leaving the warranty provider a lot of room to reject claims.

If the newlyweds live in or are moving to a house with a yard, outdoor gifts are perfectly appropriate as wedding gifts. A wheelbarrow filled with everything they'll need to plant their first garden would be much appreciated, as would outdoor furniture for their patio. Decorative pieces that accent their outdoor decor are also excellent choices for wedding gifts.

Protection from Viruses: If you are reading this article, and you still do not have current (this is very important) anti-virus software running on EVERY single computer you own, then shame on you. With all of the marketing commotion that surrounds viruses, you should already have antivirus software on all of your computers.

Wiring and cabling: Another consideration is electrical wiring and cabling. You'll need to have enough outlets to accommodate your computer and all your peripheral devices, plus any lamps, clocks and other electronic devices. You may need to hire an electrician to do some additional wiring to accommodate all the electronic devices your office requires. You'll also need enough phone lines and jacks for your business phone, fax machine, and Internet access if you're using a dial-up connection.

The same principle goes for software applications. Maybe you bought an ad and spyware blocker you really like, but the company that coded it has since gone out of business (perhaps because other consumers werent as scrupulous as you). If so, include the files you need to run the app in your must list. Now its time to look at the remaining files on your computer and prioritize.

Your current system might just need a tune-up. If your needs are legitimate, seek out a computer that has an operating system that won't cost you headaches and a lot of cash upgrading. There are still plenty of XP computers for the taking.

If you're doing the purchasing for a large office, this can be a great timesaver. Instead of having to keep track of what brands of printer ink are needed and when they need to be purchased, the office supply store will do this for you. Even if you're just buying for your personal home office this aspect of buying online is a welcome feature.
