Buying Gadgets As Christmas Presents

Gifts & Gadgets for Christmas

Gadgets can be divided, roughly, into those which have a genuine, practical purpose, and those which are appealing from a novelty, or fun, perspective. This latter category includes some gadgets which are unreservedly, and unashamedly, silly.

Even so, the dividing line between these groups can become somewhat blurred and indistinct. Your significant other may claim, for example, that a USB toaster, or an illuminating, traffic light toilet seat, has become a necessary, or even indispensable, part of modern living.

More practical gadgets include those that can be listed under the heading of "big boys' toys". GPS, or "Global Positioning System" navigation systems, or speed camera detection systems, for motorists, are examples of this type. Mobile, and Skype, phones, portable media players and DAB ("Digital Audio Broadcast") radios, along with their accessories, can also be included in this category.

Other gadgets are available, covering almost every sphere of human interest and activity. USB ("Universal Serial Bus") devices, which plug into, and are powered by, a computer, are popular. These can be used for practical, or purely entertainment, purposes in the home, or office, and range from fans and lights, to doorbells, record players, vacuum cleaners and a whole host of other novelty items. Spy equipment mini spy cameras, night vision goggles, lie detectors, and the like is also popular, for whatever reason.

When it comes to buying a gadget as a Christmas gift, you will probably find that October is traditionally the month when manufacturers and retailers introduce products, and special offers, aimed directly at the Christmas market. Also, be prepared for some older, existing products to be represented to the market with a new, Christmas "twist"; a major mobile phone manufacturer, for example, has, in the past, produced its best selling model in red and green livery, especially for Christmas.

Gadget Safety

If you are considering a gadget as a Christmas gift, you will, obviously, want to make sure that it is suitable for the recipient, and, most of all, safe to use, or operate. If you have the advantage of buying a gadget in person then this process is much easier. Most online gadget retailers do, however, thankfully include a comprehensive description of what's in the box, and what's not, along with a recommended age range for the gadget in question. Gadgets bearing the BSI Kitemark, and European Union CE mark, are certified as safer to use, and suitable for the purpose for which they were designed.

Conclusion

If you are buying a gadget for someone else, as a gift, you may like to think, first, about the characteristics and lifestyle of that person. A GPS system, for example, is a marvellous gadget, in its own right, but may be of little use to someone who only drives to the local shops once a week. Similarly, your maiden aunt may not take quite the same delight in flashing ice cubes, or a USB rocket launcher, as you do. Choose carefully.
