Buying Auto Insurance In Florida

By:

Because of the unique set of demographics that occur in Florida ' a large number of illegal immigrants and a large number of senior citizens ' auto insurance in Florida is outrageously expensive.

Many people have no choice other than to drive without insurance for as long as possible ' which means until they are caught. Even though the law does require drivers who do not own their car outright to pay for at least PIP (personal injury protection), many drivers choose to ignore this requirement.

What happens if you are in an accident caused by these uninsured drivers? Your own insurance company has already taken that into consideration, and you are most probably paying for 'uninsured motorists'. You are stuck paying to have that other person's car fixed!

Even though there are stiff penalties in place for people who drive without insurance, the courts are so backed up that chances are nothing happens, certainly not in the near future. Even if a police officer investigates an accident scene where an uninsured motorist is involved, he may only hand over a ticket and fail to impound the car.

Because insurance premiums are so expensive, policies are broken down into six months rather the usual annual policies in other states. If you happen to be researching a move to Florida and you are looking at insurance quotes, be aware that the quotes you receive must be doubled in order to get a quote that is more in line with the way you are used to paying your policies.

Getting quotes is a bit difficult, too, if you are just looking for a ballpark figure. Most agents refuse to provide quotes without taking your personal information which includes your social security number and license number. They need to run your driving history and credit report to provide a reliable quote.

If you are serious about getting multiple quotes, be careful how often you provide your personal information because each time an insurance company runs your credit report, it affects your FICO score. Too many inquiries from the same type of company looks like you have been denied over and over and that you are still looking. So, as you start getting quotes from your sixth and seventh agent, these people are going to see the previous inquiries and start wondering what the problem is.

Rather than doing this online, choose a few companies you think you'd like to do business with, and stick with them.
