Buying And Using Industrial Ups Systems

By:

An uninterruptible power supply is typically used to connect to electronics that would be damaged in the event of a sudden power failure, but can be used for other purposes. Industrial UPS systems are employed by businesses and other large facilities that use a lot of computerized devices which cannot tolerate sudden power loss.

These power supplies offer extremely short-term power. They work for only 5-15 minutes, depending on the type of system and the load that is on it. But this time period is enough for backup generators to kick in, or for the proper shut-down procedures to be implemented, and can be invaluable in protecting sensitive equipment.

Larger power supplies such as those utilized by businesses and other large facilities often have additional features beyond the ability to provide power in the event of a complete power failure. Even the simplest devices can be used to prevent damage during surges, as the system monitors the incoming voltage and switches to battery power when it is either too high or too low. But this relatively crude method may not be enough for certain electronics, and more sophisticated devices are available.

The relatively crude system described above is called an off-line supply. These are usually small devices designed to power a computer or two in the event of a power failure. More sophisticated systems that are available are called line-interactive and on-line machines.

Line-interactive systems consist of a battery connected to a power outlet, and an autotransformer connected to the same outlet in a Y-shape. The power usually runs through the autotransformer, which smoothes out any dips or surges within its capacity, and the system only switches to battery power when there are large dips, surges, or a complete failure.

On-line systems have the battery and the wall outlet connected to the device together at all times. The power comes from the wall but runs through a rectifier, which simply drops out of the circuit in the event of a power failure. This type of device is useful for especially sensitive equipment, as the combination of the rectifier and the battery mean that it always provides a constant supply of power, no matter what the electricity coming through the wall is doing.

New technologies are also emerging in this market, as in other technological markets. A hydrogen fuel cell device is available for providing long run times with a relatively heavy load, which could be of interest to companies or facilities using many sensitive pieces of computerized equipment. Dynamic uninterruptible power supplies are also a possibility for places with high energy needs-- these are larger devices that store power on a flywheel, and are sometimes hooked up to a diesel generator.

For a company or facility such as hospital that uses a lot of electronics, industrial UPS systems are a must. They prevent damage to devices that would be sensitive to power failure, and allow time for the main, longer-lasting emergency power to kick in. The right system can mean saving thousands of dollars worth of equipment, and the invaluable information they contain or people they serve.
