Buying A Used Land Rover

By:

The Land Rover name has always been synonymous with hardy, basic and almost indestructible vehicles. In 1989 a new car moved the renowned manufacturer into a different era with the introduction of the Discovery, a car with the same strength as previously, but with a new level of equipment. In 1997, the smaller Freelander was introduced to complement it.

It is not only people in the countryside who want to drive 4x4s these days. When you buy a used Land Rover car you can choose to have both the traditional ruggedness of the brand, but also the opportunity to drive a comfortable modern machine with all of the creature comforts you would expect of a modern family car.

The Discovery is now in its fourth iteration and with each passing generation the car has evolved, both externally and internally. The Discovery 3 is powered by a 2.7 litre diesel engine and is equipped with a number of traction control aids, such as Hill Descent Control, Electronic Traction Control and Dynamic Stability Control. The driver can simply flick a switch to choose the type of terrain and the on-board computer will do the rest.

The Discovery 4, which was introduced in 2009, is available with a new engine that has an increased capacity of 3.0 litres and the traction control systems have been updated and enhanced. The Terrain Response system is now better attuned to set the car properly on soft sand and in the Rock Crawl mode. The interior features a new look and is finished with piano black wood. There are three levels of specification to choose from, the GS, XS and HSE. There is also a Landmark Special Edition with a host of luxurious features.

If you are looking for a smaller used Land Rover car, the Freelander is one for you. The current model, which was introduced in 2007, is the second version to bear the name. It comes in four different levels of trim and fittings and has more off-road ability than its predecessor; it also features a higher ground clearance. The standard engine is a 2.2 litre diesel and the car is available with either an automatic or manual six-speed gearbox. Interior features include a 440-watt Alpine stereo and optional extras such as on-board navigation, heated windscreen and washers.
