A badge featuring a black prancing horse on a yellow background, a scarlet body and an engine that roars. Ferrari is one of the most iconic brands in the world and a dream of most motoring enthusiasts. Getting behind the wheel of one of these amazing machines is an experience that sets the heart racing and brings pleasure to any driver.
A new car may be out of the reach of most people, but there are plenty of opportunities to buy a used Ferrari. At the lower end of the price range you can find some of the classic cars of the seventies and eighties.
The Mondial, for example, was first built in 1980 and came in two formats, a coupe and a cabriolet; the original model had a 3.0 litre V8 engine. From 1982 the engine had four valves per cylinder and in 1989 it was given a 3.4 litre V8.
The 308GT was first introduced to the public at the Paris motor show in 1975. Like many of Ferraris classic machines, Pininfarina designed the mid-engine car and there were three configurations during its ten-year lifespan. The original model had a fibreglass body, which was replaced with steel in 1977. The 308GT was replaced, in 1985, by the 328GT. It was available as both coupe and cabriole; both configurations had a 3.2 litre V8 engine.
If you are in a position to buy a more recent used Ferrari there are plenty of models to choose from.
Designed as a front-engined 2+2 coupe, the 456 was introduced in 1992. Despite it being marketed as a luxury grand tourer, it was no slouch; its 5.5 litre engine could push the car to 188 mph with four people on board. It was the first front-engined Ferrari since the 365 GTB4 in 1968.
The F430 was introduced in 2004 and was the first production car to feature an electronic differential, which helps to improve traction. It has a top speed of around 196 mph with the Scuderia variant being some 2 mph quicker.
If you are looking for a car that is a reflection of Ferraris sporting history the F40 could be the one for you. It was built in 1987 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the great marque. All of Ferraris F1 experience was brought to bear to build the first production car that could top 200 mph.
