The Honda Civic is probably one of the best-known and most popular models manufactured by the Japanese giant, Honda. Originally introduced in 1972, the Civic has undergone a huge number of models and upgrades over the years since and in its present incarnation is a stylish and attractive small family hatchback.
For anyone who is considering buying a
new Honda Civic the decision will initially be between the three and five door version.
Even the entry-level five door Honda Civic SE has a superb range of features supplied as standard. With an Anti-lock Braking System, active front head restraints, Electronic Brake force Distribution and Emergency Brake Assist, together with airbags and Vehicle Stability Assist, the latest Civic has safety features that are an integral part of the way Honda designs its cars. Add 16-inch alloy wheels and ECU engine immobiliser, front and rear electric windows, adjustable and heated electric door mirrors and a dual zone dashboard and it soon becomes clear that it is packed to the gunwales with equipment. Climate control air-conditioning and a multi-information display are also a part of the standard equipment, as is a stereo CD tuner with RDS and MP3 compatibility and an auxiliary socket for MP3 connection.
Higher level models keep loading on the features until the EX is reached and that includes voice recognition DVD satnav with integrated Bluetooth hands free telephone, High Intensity Discharge headlights and headlight washers.
There are various engine options, the entry level being a 1.4 litre i-VTEC petrol i-SHIFT giving a combined fuel economy of 49.6 mpg. The higher performance models, such as the ES-T have 1.8 litre i-VTEC petrol engines with manual or automatic transmission, giving combined fuel economy of 38.7 mpg in automatic and 42.2 mpg as a manual.
The three door models come in four trims and have very sporty lines. The entry level Type S has 1.4 litre petrol engines with either manual or i-SHIFT transmission, the former giving a sound 47.9 mpg and the latter an even better 49.6 mpg.
The Honda Civic is an impressive compact hatchback, whichever model is chosen and performs well both around town and out on the open road. With an excellent range of options, in terms of colour, trims, engine sizes, transmissions and equipment, this is a car that can be enjoyed both for its looks and its performance.
