Buy Seeds To Start Your Urban Homestead

By:

You don’t have to live in the sticks to have a garden. In fact, many people who live in major cities are starting full-fledged farms of their own. They buy seeds and cultivate vegetable and herb gardens; some keep small amounts of livestock on hand, as well. This may seem odd to some, but anybody who casts a worried eye on the CPI, or has some knowledge of the fragility of our retail food supply chain, will see the wisdom in developing at least a measure of independence where food is concerned.
Some people call this “urban homesteading,” and it can start with something as simple as someone going out to buy seeds for a few tomato plants – or it could expand to include fish pools, worm farms, and a major hydroponic garden.

The best approach to building a self-supporting farm is selecting non-hybrid, non-GMO organic heirloom bulk seeds. They can be collected and re-used for generations without diminished yield or nutritional benefit. They produce food that is not only recognizable, but amazingly good – and very good for you, as well.

What heirloom bulk seeds should you select when choosing to buy seeds? Well, the easiest answer would be “All of them” – vegetables and fruits of all kinds and colors. The late Jack LaLane, one of history’s most knowledgeable and successful health entrepreneurs, used to tell people that the more natural colors were on their plate, the healthier their meal would be. Since the guy could tear off 100 pushups at age ninety, he obviously knew what he was talking about!

When you go out to buy seeds, keep beans in mind as a good protein source. They have been a staff of life in the Western Hemisphere since the days of the Anasazi and Aztecs. They’re high-value and low-burden as a staple, easy to cultivate and grow and really hard to mess up. They make good neighbors in the garden next to squash, corn, and tomatoes, all of which are good choices for people looking to buy seeds.
