There are several different approaches you can take when buying moving boxes. You can either buy brand new boxes or used ones. A third option is rent plastic boxes that can be returned, though this option is not available to all parts of the country. There are pros and cons to buying new or used boxes.

The main advantage of getting new moving boxes is that they're strong and durable. They won't have any wear and tear on them, and most boxes sold by moving companies and box stores can withstand the rigors of transportation. The importance of having strong boxes should not be taken lightly. They will be stacked on top of on another during the move, and a weak box could easily collapse under the weight of others. The result could be disastrous.

You will sleep better at night knowing that your most fragile items are protected with brand new, corrugated moving boxes. The last thing anyone wants while moving is to find out that their priceless possessions were damaged because their boxes weren't strong enough.

What are the downsides to buying new boxes? First, you will have to pay more money. New moving boxes are going to cost more than used ones, that's nothing earth shattering. Moving can cost a lot of money, and buying new boxes is going to add to your expenses. Second, chances are you won't have a need for them again once you have moved. So buying brand new boxes doesn't seem to be economical.

On the other hand, used moving boxes are cheaper and will save you money during your move. You can find used boxes that have very little wear and tear, since many have only been used once or twice. Also, you may be able to get used ones for free if you go to the right places. They are widely available, as boxes are used for so many jobs nowadays. Plus, you are helping out the environment.

The downside of course is that they have been used by someone else. Even if they have just a little wear and tear, it might be enough for them to breakdown. The most important key is to get used boxes from a good source.

Getting new or used moving boxes has it's good and bad. You can always get the best of both worlds by purchasing a little of both. Buy new boxes for your prized possessions, and used ones for items that are durable, such as books, clothing, shoes, and so on.
