Buy A New Digital Camera - Canon 60d Or T3i

By:

When you consider the Canon T3i or 60D, you may ask if there are sufficient feature differences to substantiate the production of two digital SLRs in the mid-level camera market, particularly when they are produced by the same company. Without doubt, it is something Canon must have thought about long and hard. After all, it looks like the same group of photographers would be interested in both since they are nearly identical.

But hold the train, there is yet a third model in the Canon line-up with the same image sensor (18-megapixels). The pro-type Canon 7D is the other camera that shares this sensor. The plot thickens!

Let's just say that the 7D is in a whole other species in spite of the image sensor resemblance. Pro and semi-pro photographers are the ones who usually lay out the cash for the 7D. We will shelve that discussion for another article and concentrate on the two cameras in question here.

To be an authentic upgrade, a camera should be better or improved over the former model in all features, and this is true of the Canon Rebel T3i with respect to the T2i. However, there is quite a bit of controversy among pixel peepers about the legitimacy of the Canon 60D being called an "upgrade" because of the fact that it does not improve on all the hardware and software of the 50D.

Why is this true? Only the folks at Canon can explain that. The "upgrade" question has nothing to do with how these two models compare to each other. In fact, it is a moot point when you consider the way customers are scooping up these two cameras.

The bottom line here is, "Which camera seems to fit your needs or desires?"

Differences may not be as apparent in this comparison as in some others. To start off, the image sensor and processor for the two cameras are identical. Add to that the body construction being similar, and you have some muddied water in this comparison.

Let's take these changes in a kind of random order since there is no way of knowing which one will make the big difference for you.

Body construction - yes, the material is the same, but the Canon 60D is environmentally sealed while the Rebel is not.

Shutter speed - the T3i's fastest shutter is 1/4000 which is only half the speed of the other camera, plus it has a sync shutter speed for flash of 1/200 sec compared to 1/250 sec. These two shutter speed differences can be significant depending upon the lighting of a particular shot.

With regard to Continuous Shooting Rate, the Canon T3i gives a honorable 3.7fps, nevertheless that does not compare to the 5.3fps of the 60D. Another win for the big boy. If you are into action photography, this is a major difference.

Focus - Both models have a 9-point auto focus system, however the system is not the same. The 60D has all nine points as "cross-type" auto focus points. In the T3i, only the center point has the cross-type technology attached to it. This can make a big difference in the way each camera handles auto-focus.

A word about Video. The Canon T3i has one feature that the 60D cannot match. If you are a lover of video, the Digital Zoom feature should get you excited. You can magnify the scene from 3x to 10x while maintaining excellent quality. This means a 50mm lens can act like a 500mm lens without degrading the quality.

Another difference exists in how many pictures you can take on a single battery charge. Then there is also the size and weight, the 60D being a larger model. The amount of money to get one of these cameras into your hands also differs. For most people, price is a major player in the buying decision. It usually is for nearly all photographers.
