Button Collars Without Ties

By:

In the mid 1960's up until the early 1970's there was a time when it was fashionable for men to wear a "Nehru" Jacket. A Nehru jacket was a style of jacket from India, first worn by the India's Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and then other Indian leaders from the 1940's on. It has buttons that go right up the front to the base of the neck and is meant to be worn with all buttons fastened and worn without a tie. It is considered formal wear in India. It was popularized by the Beatles in the West during the "mod" fashion days.

In addition to the Nehru jacket, there are shirts that are meant to be worn in the same way, that button up the front all the way to the neck and are worn without a tie. They are sometimes called collarless shirts, or shirts with stand-up collars and have once again re-emerged as a fashion trend. They can be made out of a variety of materials cotton, linen, rayon or silk being the most popular. They can have no pockets, one breast pocket, or two breast pockets. If you are planning to wear a Nehru jacket , then you must compliment it with a Nehru style collarless shirt.

The shirt will be buttoned up all the way to the top and the shirt collar will protrude ever so slightly from behind the collar of the Nehru jacket if it is properly fitted. The shirt color should match the Nehru jacket color exactly so as not to make a thin disturbing color line around the neck at the top of the shirt where one can see the exposed part. The Nehru shirt and jacket are supposed to blend together into one uniform color.

collarless shirt is a good choice in the summertime. It makes a dramatic fashion statement when worn, because it combines the effectiveness of being formally dressed with an exotic historical Indian feel. Many modern designers are now offering collarless shirts as an alternative to shirts that require one to wear a tie. In comparison, if you button up a shirt with a standard collar all the way to the top and do not wear a tie with it, it makes you look nerdy and like you forgot to finish to get dressed properly.

Whereas a collarless shirt looks stunning and a finished fashion presentation, when it is simply buttoned all the way to the top at the neck. Just don't wear a black Nehru type collarless shirt of the type that are designed to be worn by catholic priests unless anti-Catholicism is part of your radical punk rocker fashion statement. Otherwise it is not very appropriate to appear to impersonate a priest.

Someone might confess their sins to you and you will not know what to do. Catholic priests wear a collarless shirt that looks like a Nehru style collar but also has a place to fit a white plastic card to connect the two edges of the collar in front as the finished look. You can wear a black Nehru type collarless shirt, just don't have that white card of the priest in the front.
