Butterfly Koi Are A Quite Recent Breed Of Fish

Butterfly Koi fish, Longfin Koi, or Dragon Carp are a type of
ornamental fish notable for their elongated finnage. The fish are
a breed of the common carp, Cyprinus carpio, which includes
numerous wild carp races as well as domesticated koi
("Nishikigoi").They are largely unpopular in Europe and Asia, but
are popular in the United States where they are more readily
available.

It is not uncommon for a mature Koi with good genetics and a
spacious pond to grow to 32 inches in length. Butterfly Koi fish
start to develop elongated fins and tails at about six months of
age, but really start coming into their own at about a year.
Butterfly Koi are not as many people believe, a hybrid of
goldfish or Koi. Like any other animal, Koi fish require time and
money to maintain. Do not let this discourage you though, as
educating yourself will greatly improve your chances of
succeeding.

It is said that King Shoko of Ro had presented a Koi to the first
son of the great Chinese Philosopher Confucius at his birth
somewhere between 551 and 479 BC. Confucius named his son after
the fish because it was considered to be a symbol of strength and
power.

Butterfly Koi originated in the mid-20th century as a result of
an effort to increase the hardiness of traditional koi. In the
mid 20th Century a few Japanese breeders tried crossing their
beloved Nishikigoi with a wild Indonesian Long fin carp to try to
enhance and capture the hardiness that was lost from Centuries
of inbreeding and refinement for color.

It is recommended that you seek professional advice on
construction layouts, drainage systems, pond liners, electrical
supply for Koi pond pumps, Koi filters and any pond fixtures,
such as waterfalls or fountains, to be installed. Having the
right pond pump is important in giving the koi pond the proper
filtration and aeration.
