Businesses Benefit From Automating Inventory Using Barcoding

By:

Twice a year Lamons Gasket Co., a large bolt and gasket supplier, employed up to 75 people to painstakingly inventory tens of thousands of small bolts and gaskets manually. They shut down all facilities and spent three days handwriting product counts. The company did three rounds of counting to check their work and avoid errors.

But last December Lamons decided to go paperless and automate the inventory process. The company, based out of Houston, Texas, turned to MSS Software, a company in Fairfax, Virginia that provides barcode rentals, barcode equipment and barcode software that allow businesses large and small to easily collect inventory data electronically. Lamons rented barcode scanners, a cheaper alternative to buying, and the results were astounding. With the assistance of MSS Softwares barcode specialists they decided to rent the Intermec CN3 and CK 3 Win Mobile Computers.

It saved time and money. It took no more than a day to finish all the inventory work, said Mark Schultze, who is in charge of doing inventory at Lamons. Schultze said he estimates that the company saved up to 20% compared to previous years and he expects that number to rise in the coming year.

The actual stock count was much more accurate, which is always an advantage, Schutze said.

The gasket supplier plans to continue to rent barcode scanners from MSS Software next year. The company found the transition easy because MSS Software was helpful in guiding them in various technical aspects, according to Schutze. The company found the barcode equipment effective but simple to use and found it easy to train employees.

Lamons is not the only company benefiting from collecting stock data electronically with bar code scanning equipment. Like Lamons, Nifco American produces small parts. They produce hundreds of thousands of car assembly parts every year. The company has multiple locations with its largest in Columbus, Ohio.

Atchie Ateson, who is in charge of IT at Nifco, said the company has been renting scanners from MSS Software for three years. He said they rent barcode readers to supplement inventory scanners they already own. They chose to rent Intermecs 2435 barcode readers.

It works really well. Its affordable and it gets the job done, he said.
