Knowing how much to get involved and how to achieve a return on your invested time, is the toughest part of social networking, but hopefully once youve read this article youll have a better idea of when you should take the plunge.

To me, social networks and online Business Networking Groups that work well and are likely to be beneficial to me, are ones that have a powerful community feeling within them, where people are willing to be open with their thoughts and keen to connect with people and new information.

And theres the rub, because this new level of openness is bound to require a philosophical change for the majority of business people. Online Business Networking Groups require you, the participant, to be less controlling with your actions and tasks, to shed your feelings about holding information close to you, and be supportive rather than targeted in your connections.

Of course, the offline world is far different. As the owner of Ecademy I have to make sure that my marketing is planned in advance, the message is targeted and I invest money in the creation of an advert, a brochure, telesales, list buying, managing the flow of information from my company.

I target myself and others with finding 'suspects, prospects and customers'. I measure the results and conversion of success and I focus on the product and service Im delivering and what Im selling. I focus my marketing on broadcasting my message, hoping to reach as many people as possible with the right message at the right time. I probably target a specific geographical area.

Are online business networking groups different to the real world versions?

But online Im living in a real-time, on demand, emotional, conversational, random universe, where, importantly, friendship is more powerful than a business relationship.

Im listening, reading and connecting more, and I understand what people want to buy, not selling what I need to sell. Its more than a marketing channel, this is a whole new way of doing business, and if youre not online right now, using Business Networking Groups and building valuable friendships, youre missing out.
