Business Energy Costs Create Higher Prices For All Of Us

By:

Energy costs have skyrocketed in recent years and there seems to be no end in sight. Business energy costs have risen at an alarming rate and are a large contributor to increases in cost to the customers. It must be passed on to customers or else the business itself will go under. It would pay the small business owner to check for better pricing through another supplier.

As alternative sources of energy become more common place, the cost should at least stabilise, however it will be some time before such sources as wind farms, geothermal, hydroelectric, and solar are in common use here in the United Kingdom. Until then we rely upon coal, oil, and natural gas for the bulk of our energy source.

Generally, businesses pay substantially higher costs for gas and electricity than does the average home owner, and this can actually be an advantage for the business. As rates are higher, they may well find that negotiating lower prices for gas and electricity can be successful. Look into some of the online companies that offer to check around and compare energy costs for you, instead of spending time on it yourself - time that could better be spent concentrating on your business. Keep in mind that your energy cost and bills will be calculated on how many units of that particular source of energy you actually use.

Many business owners prefer to pay what is called a "standing charge", which simply means that when the utility meter is read, they take down the number the meter gives, and this is then compared to the previous reading. The difference is the amount your business energy costs is based on how much is owed for that particular time period, usually one month. As electricity is measured by kilowatt hours, this amount will be reflected in a total of X amount of kilowatt hours used. Gas meters, on the other hand, measure gas by volume used in cubic metres, then the gas company will need to convert that into kilowatt hours of usage.

Prices will vary by supplier and this is determined by tariff or what type of pricing plan you are on and the supplier's own predetermined price per kilowatt hour of usage. Sounds complicated but basically you must check around and compare between the available energy providers until you find one that will give your business a good deal on energy costs.

Most energy suppliers offer various discounts and one that a business may well be qualified to obtain is paying by direct debit. This allows the supplier to average your bill out over a twelve month period and then be assured of a prompt and speedy payment directly through your bank account and debit payment. This budgeted method of payment helps many business owners as they will know exactly what that bill will be each and every month, instead of being suddenly hit by an especially large bill for one months usage.
Until hydro, wind, solar, and geothermal energy sources are common place business energy costs are something that can be somewhat controlled by the business owner.
