By:

Have you heard of a Business Development Coach and wondered if they could be of help to you? Maybe you've heard of a Life Coach but you knew that didn't really fill your needs. So, you may be wondering, how do you know if a Business Coach is right for you?

Are you the person that:
- has great ideas for a business but are unable to get them off the ground
- has an idea, and you know it's a great one but you just don't know where to begin
- gets excited about a new business idea but then loses that excitement when somebody doubts you
- gets aggravated because and idea you didn't act on is now making someone else successful
- has taken a new idea and put it into action but aren't getting the success you should be

Step 1. Find a Coach. You've heard the saying about surrounding yourself with people that are like the person you want to be. It couldn't be truer. When looking for a coach you want to ask what they've created that has been successful. How did they do it? and most importantly, does this person resonate with me? Working as closely as you will with a coach is a very personal relationship. Not all coaches are best suite to all clients.

What to look for in a Business Development Coach?

- Someone with a track record of developing new businesses for themselves and others
- Someone with a great deal of experience with proven methods of organization
- Someone that can speak to your truthfully, whether you are ready to hear it or not
- Someone that can help you define your goals, both short and long term
- Someone that will keep you focused with your goals in site
- Someone with a highly creative vision that works outside the box more often than in
- Someone that is supportive and encouraging, never judgmental - all criticism should be constructive
- Someone that has a skill, tool or personality trait that will benefit you that you can't find in another coach

Step 2. Let your coach get to know you, the 'real' you. To be as productive as possible it's important for you coach to know what excites you and what keeps you on task. What actions/activities make you crazy and non-productive. Don't hold back and don't talk about the person you'd like to become.

Be open and honest about the person you are today. There are so many tools on the market it's important that together you choose the tools that are best suited to your skill sets. What works for the client before you may not be what works best for you. This is your path and by finding the right directions you become the best business person you can be.

Step 3. With your coach you will identify the potential areas of success within your idea. What are the possible income streams, marketing strategies, etc. Your coach will help you flesh these out in detail.

Step 4. With your coach you will begin creating benchmarks, short term and long term goals. Your coach will help you stay focuses and on track. Re-evaluating as you go and making sure that momentum is always working to your advantage.

At the beginning you may want to work with your coach weekly or bi-monthly to create momentum and accountability. As your idea takes form you will be able to reduce your meetings to monthly and perhaps, eventually quarterly. Don't cheat yourself. The money spent on coaching will be the best money you spend developing your business. It will save you from costly mistakes and you will more along the path faster than you would on your own so the income will start coming in earlier.

Step 5. Reap the benefits of working with your coach. If you are working together on a regular basis you should have:
- More clarity in your vision both personally and professionally
- More time for a balanced life because you are no longer wasting time on tedious things
- Renewed enthusiasm for the current business project and ideas for future projects
- Financial Reward
- Personal Reward

Please don't feel like hiring a business coach is using a crutch. The most successful entrepreneurs know that surrounding themselves with the right people is the most valuable investment they make.
