Simplest design of bus stop or shelter is merely construction of enclosure with a back wall and two sides. There are benches or chairs for people to sit when they are waiting for the bus to arrive. There are other bus shelters which are bigger and may have multiples lines of benches to occupy more people. Both smaller and the bigger bus shelters are built up of various materials.

Different types of materials used for the shelter construction is wood, metal and most common Plexiglas. Plexiglas is common choice as people can see directly through it when the bus arrives. Large shelters for buses are usual at most important transfer stations, as there are lots of passengers to change buses or to board bus. Larger bus shelters are also found at central bus stations where passengers can decide from the diversity of bus routes. They are very essential at larger bus stations where there would be people to help passengers with the bookings and information about the buses to various destinations. Also they can be refuge points for the passengers when the weather is improper, like during heavy snow and rains and also in horrid climates when the temperatures are soaring.

These help in keeping the surroundings of them clean. On roads which are small and narrow bus shelters are not available. Instead of the bus shelters poles or flags are present which indicate the bus stops. On the poles and the flags pictures of bus are put for easier identification. On the bus shelters there is information available about the bus and their destinations; also they add the frequency of the buses.
