Bus stop or bus shelter as it called as is a selected place where buses stop for passengers to embark or depart a bus. These are usually located on the main road and are different from off-highway services such as bus stations. It is noted that the way it is constructed is influenced by usage level of that particular area.

Stops at busy locations have shelters, seating and bus information put up on electronic boards. Bus shelters, which are less, populated all the facilities may not be there and it may be in the form of a flag or a pole.

They provide the traveler with lot of safety. The biggest advantage is that during the boarding the passengers are gathered at one spot and not at various stops, this reduces the time utilized for it. There are postures put up on the walls or the boards. Few of these advertisements are interactive. Advertisement comes in various patterns like illuminated, changeable or animated. They are very attractive. They have separate street furniture like a bench or lighting around it and also garbage. This also helps in keeping them clean and today.

There are few essential things that are taken into consideration while deciding the size and details to be put in the bus shelter. It depends mostly on the population that will be using that particular bus shelter. Various factors that are taken into consideration are number of loadings that is population size of the people and the number of buses, time for which the bus will be at the bus shelter, green time and cycle length of the traffic signal and the clearance time that the bus takes to get back in the traffic in the adjoining roads. They are designed on main roads so that they do not add the traffic.

Today the bus stops are made with a very creative taste. They are of different and innovative shapes and schemes. Few of them are designed like strawberries or goal posts or school buses or watermelon. Few are structure like a castle or a country house. Many of them are air-conditioned or have swings. These are meant to relieve stress of the passengers when they are waiting for the buses. They also keep children occupied.

In many countries the areas around the bus shelters are protected by the government. Parking of private vehicles is strictly prohibited in these areas.
