Buried In Debt? Hire A Life Coach!

The financial crises we are facing in this country has brought everything to a head. The United States is supposed to be a superpower in the world yet many of the citizens of the US are impoverished and relying heavily on welfare. A great majority of people are fighting to keep their heads above water and under a roof to call their own. As a nation we have watched the auto industry collapse and major financial institutions; giants who all begged for a bail out. But you are not General Motors and yet your struggles probably feel equally as overwhelming and as heavy.

Financial Struggle

First, know that you are not alone. The news about foreclosures, high credit card debts, and escalating bankruptcies is a national phenomenon. The knowledge that everyone else is down on their knees should not make you complacent. Next, ask yourself why are you in this situation? Granted millions of people have committed the same mistakes that you have made. In the end however, you did know and recognize that you were in financial trouble - we all did. But did nothing to stop the problem.

As everyone clamors for help, the internet has taken advantage of people and a lot of people are claiming to be experts in the field of credit. Unfortunately their supposed help will probably set you back even more than you already are. You do not need an expert on finances, you need someone to make you see within yourself and help you to realize what went wrong and what will be necessary to turn your financial life around.

Getting into Financial Shape

The key to taking back your financial power and being back in control is to explore areas related to the financial situation you are in at the present time. Questions that will be important to answer are: what was going on with you as you were over-extending your credit, what was going on when you were spending money you didn't have, what was going on when you purchased a house that was outside of your ability to pay, etc. These questions are not to make you wrong about the situation but to determine a baseline of thought and actions that created this situation. You have to know what got you here before you can determine what will get you out and keep you out of debt.

Identify and Calculate

The next step would be to begin to write down the things you purchase on a daily basis for one week. Do not curb your spending just be honest in where the money is being spent. How many times do you go to the grocery store? How many cups of coffee did you buy on your way to work? How many times did you eat out this week? How many times did you buy something on impulse?

Think about this - making one trip to the grocery store with a week's list of food and household products will actually allow you to spend less money than making two or three trips in a given week. Other side benefits are saving money on gas, time, and unnecessary spending. These savings can add up in a hurry and these saving can help in paying down debt or building up savings.

At the end of the week, add up how much money was spent and honestly assess what was "necessary" and what was "unnecessary". This snapshot of your spending is a first step in improving your financial picture. You can not improve this situation unless you are brutally honest with yourself.

Use of a Life Coach

Using a life coach as the objective party in sorting out a financial mess is a step in the right direction. A life coach helps to make us more aware of ourselves as a person. A life coach sees the good, the bad, and the ugly all rolled into the life we are currently leading. A life coach can pinpoint your weaknesses and support your strengths. The coach will support you in creating your financial goals and help you align your actions to accomplish the identified goals. A life coach will hold you accountable and responsible for your financial life.
