What you see Would you like to have a morning cup of tea and bun maska in the company of departed souls? No, this is Lucky restaurant in Ahmedabadnot a trick question. It is something that the patrons of Lucky restaurant in Ahmedabad do daily. While enjoying their morning cuppa, flipping through the newspaper or chatting with friends, they almost seem blissfully unaware of the tombs that occupy the restaurant.

Lucky restaurant in Lal Darwaja is more than 50 odd years old and undoubtedly one of the most well-known places in Ahmedabad for tea and muska bun (with white butter). Lucky started as a small kitli (tea stall) in a cemetery. As it got popular, it expanded to a two room restaurant with wooden tables and chairs, around 20 green colored tombs and a huge tree growing in the middle. The tombs are believed to belong to Sufi poets and saints from the Mughal era.

Luckys popularity seems to be across classes. In fact, M F Hussain, the renowned painter, is known to be one of the oldest and loyal customers of this place. As a token of love, Husain even gifted a painting to Lucky which is hung on the walls of the restaurant with great pride. The artist is so in love with the restaurants tea and muska bun that he had even got it delivered through a friend for him in Dubai.

What you get Lucky, other than white butter muska bun and masala chai offers South Indian and North Indian vegetarian food. Fresh fruit juices are served too.

In sandwiches they have a lot of variety like Aloo mutter, Cheese, Vegetable grilled toasts and so on. The lunch menu is adequate with soups, different types of paneer and vegetable gravies, Dum alu, Dal fry and rice items. In South Indian food, you can go for Coconut rava masala dosa, Mangalore masala dosa, Andhra dosa, Mysore dosa, Idli, Medu vada, Upma etc.

Lucky also offers fixed lunch and dinner thalis consisting of butter milk, papad, three chapatis or puri, two vegetable sabjis, paneer dish, rice, pickle, dal, rasam and a sweet for Rs. 70. And if you are looking for South Indian flavors, the fixed lunch has papad, rice, dry sabji, curd, buttermilk, rasam, sambar and pickle for Rs. 55.

In juices you can try orange, apple and chickoo while in milkshakes they have chocolate milk shake, dry fruit milk shake and more.

Our verdict Lucky is not your high-end restaurant so dont expect any posh or classy setting. Nonetheless, it draws a lot of tourist crowd. Its food is average but its white butter muska bun is a winner. When you go there dont miss to see Hussains painting. The prices are easy on the wallet. Service is average. As Lucky is located in the old city, forget about finding a place for parking. No home delivery or catering services are provided.
