Bullying: A Social Epidemic in Education

Social Epidemic. To some this may seem extreme or exaggerated, but when you
look at the long term effects of bullying on kids you will begin to
understand the relevance of this statement. According to Duane Alexander,
M.D. director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
(NICHD), “Being bullied is not just an unpleasant rite of passage through
childhood. It’s a public health problem that merits attention. People who
were bullied as children are more likely to suffer from depression and low
self esteem, well into adulthood, and the bullies themselves are more likely
to engage in criminal behavior later in life.”

Indicators of bullying are showing up in older adolescents and young adults
all over this country. Men and women alike are suffering from depression,
anxiety, poor body image, and low self-esteem. These issues, in turn, have
detrimental effects on personal relationships, professional growth, and
health. Both physical and mental health problems are more frequent in
individuals that have been bullied in their youth.

If these issues stem from the evils of bullying that occur in schools
everyday, then what is the role of schools in this epidemic? My blanket
answer is that the solution is education for all involved. For schools the
job is to educate to make all students productive citizens for a diverse
society. Therefore, I would argue that for educators (schools) the role is
to educate the students, teachers, administrators, even parents in the realm
of bullying. Should this start at home? Absolutely, but so should math,
reading, writing, etc. The schools are facing the problem so they should
continue working diligently to solve it.

What next? Mr Mojo Travis Brown is a nationally recognized speaker on
Anti-Bullying and is touring schools all across the country to help
