Building Your Network Marketing Business Today

The world of network marketing can be overwhelming. Huge product lines, catalogs, web sites, sales sheets, marketing systems, compensation plans, bonus structures, training books, tapes and videos can practically drown a new recruit in information. On the upside, this means there are hundreds paths toward building your network marketing business. On the downside, this can overwhelm you and cause you to quit before you even get started.

Building your network marketing business starts with you. So many people enter the field with dreams of making $10,000 a month by just sitting in their living room. This isn't going to happen. As with anything, there is a learning curve. People spend over 16 years in school before they attain a job that pays them $50,000 a year. While the rewards for network marketing may be higher, success is not achieved overnight. It requires study and it requires work. So the first step to building your network marketing business is to study.

Take two or three products from the catalog and settle on one or two proven sales strategies with your mentor (you should always have a mentor). Spend your first month focusing only on learning everything there is to know about these two products and mastering the ins and outs of your chosen sales technique. Don't worry about making a million dollars your first month and don't worry about building a team. Get comfortable before you go reaching for the sky. Once you have gotten comfortable with your baseline technique and products, you'll find that learning about other products and adapting to new techniques is much easier.

After your fist month, sit down and set goals for yourself. What do you hope to achieve? What does success look like to you? Does it mean quitting your day job? Making $50,000 a year? More? Set one or two long term goals and then break it down by week and by day. Mary Kay Ash, the founder of Mary Kay cosmetics, was fond of saying, "Inch by inch, it's a cinch, but yard by yard, it's hard." So if your goal is to make $50,000 per year, you'd need to bring in $962 a week, or $192 a day (based on a 5 day week). This example, of course, means you aren't taking vacation, but you get the picture. Break it down to a daily goal. That way you know where you stand at all times. You may want to tape your daily goals to the computer, the telephone, the refrigerator, or the TV. This will remind you of your goals and get you thinking about where your daily money will be coming from each day, and how you will work toward building your network marketing business.

Ask questions and learn from those who came before you. The person who recruited you should be your best friend the first month you are in business. They should be your second best friend thereafter. Maintain contact and a good relationship with your mentor. Ask questions. Find out what their best practices for success are. And if they aren't willing to help, find someone who will. There is a vast network marketing community and there is always someone willing to give advice.

The best advice for building your network marketing business is to just simply get started. Put down the books, the tapes, the training material and just start talking to people. Live the motto "fail forward," learn from your mistakes, shake of rejection quickly and just keep moving.
