Building Your Business With An Opt-in List

By:

Before uncovering the secrets of the trades, here are the myths and false beliefs that need to be cleared before you indulge in building an opt-in list. These merchandising misconceptions could pose so much of an obstacle towards you profiting from your business enterprise!

A lot of people don't use email -
This is a huge misconception! Email marketing is one of the most effective ways of marketing nowadays, simply because almost every single person uses email! A person without an email address is equal to a person without a home phone. Its almost nonexistent. Of course there are some exceptions but for the most part in our generation most people are very up-to-date technologically speaking. Use this to your advantage!

Email marketing campaigns can outrage people -
The easy way to overcome this dilemma is done through permission-based advertising. There is usually two types of email marketing. The good - permission based and the bad - spamming. Even if you get 10 no's from people, at least the 10 yes's you got will be worth your while, you will be respecting their wishes to receive ads or to not receive ads. If you just spam everyone, you are just going to piss them off, they will add you to their ignore list, and you could have just lost out on a very important prospect!

The real deal with building an opt-in list -
After clearing the fog involving email marketing myths, here's how you can benefit from employing the power of email marketing campaigns - building an opt-in list. However, establishing an opt-in list is not a piece of cake especially for the inexperienced. Here is a rundown of tips on how to succeed in this kind of marketing endeavor.

- Make sure the list really is an opt-in list. For example, if you have a writing business and you offer a list, make sure they have the choice to join your list or not. Just think back to all the times you received mailings form people that you didn't want to receive mailing from. You had no idea how you even got signed up, did you? And after 15 emails you finally got annoyed enough to unsubscribe! This is not what you want. If the lister wants to be added, then let them. If they don't, don't force them! People like choices.

- If the website or program you belong to allows "tracking" make sure you implement this when it comes to sending out broadcasts. This is nice because not only can you see who read it and who didn't, but you can also employ a tracker for links clicked within the broadcast. So if you send the broadcast to 100 people and only 80 read it you can see that out of those 80 only 60 actually clicked the link. Usually what I use tracking for is to figure out who is with me and who isn't.

Sometimes people just sign up for things and don't have any intention of reading anything from you. In these cases I usually give the receiver a few months. If they don't read the broadcast EVER nor do they click any links given in the newsletter, I delete them. No point in having users you can't "use".

These maneuvers should be utilized with caution and should concentrate on gaining the confidence of your opt-in list instead of simply collecting data for your own gain. Make sure that the forms that you will use and other methods that you will utilize will not necessitate too much fuss in order to subscribe. This is for people who don't want to be annoyed during the process of signing up!
