Once the ice melts, it seeps down into the top of the surface of the concrete and the rock becomes destabilized. When the temperature drops down, it causes the water to freeze again, and the damage occurs.

When rebar metal exists in the concrete, salt and other deicing chemicals cause rust and corrode. When this happens, the corrosion will put pressure on the concrete that can cause the concrete to crack. As the concrete cracks, it will be more susceptible to de-icer and salt which causes the concrete to break even faster.

An effective way to prevent concrete from damage, it's suggested to treat it with a saline based concrete sealer before the damage occurs. The concrete treat can be used for indoor and outdoor use.
