Building Character Into Timber Frame Barns

By:

I remember watching a scene from the movie "Witness" where a young Harrison Ford is sent out to an Amish community to protect a young boy that is the only eyewitness to mob murder. During one of the scenes when the whole community comes together to work, a new barn is raised that is built using traditional tools and sold timber construction. Recounting the quality workmanship that is still alive and well throughout the Amish people, the solid timber frame barns that were depicted in the film can be found elsewhere in the country outside of the Amish countryside of Pennsylvania.

Building timber frame designs that can stand up to the elements and add a lasting building to the landscape of any community, the same quality and precision that was depicted on the screen is available to anyone that is working the land and who needs a solidly built barn to house their animals or equipment. Owning horse property or farmland or even having a land track that can accommodate an impressive wooden structure there are many different uses for timber frame barns that are being built in the same style of architecture that has been used for generations.

Starting with an understanding of what the completed structure will be used for; timber frame designers can layout the schematics of the size and shape of the barn that will be used on a daily basis by a landowner, farmer or rancher. Cutting the beams of the barn so that they are easily fitted together on the job site, the timber frame designers are meticulous in their attention to detail. Ensuring a tight fit of every joist and stud that holds the timber construction together, the professionals that are specializing in building barns the old fashioned way are providing buildings that have character and charm unmatched by the modern constructions that are found in rural communities.

Ensuring the mooring of the pegs that are fitted into place as the floor and walls of the timber frame barns are being assembled the craftsmen that are continuing the tradition of centuries old barn raisings are adding unique and well crafted timber frame barns to properties that want to distinguish their buildings from the modern pre-manufactured construction projects of today. Giving their stamp of approval to the solid timber construction process that is still in use today within the Amish communities of Pennsylvania, the time honored tradition of a barn raising is making a comeback to the people that want the best housing for their livestock and machinery.
