Storage space comes at a premium, and for many the two primary places for storage are the basement and garage. But what happens when those areas become cluttered? One solution is to place an outdoor storage shed in your yard. You either have the option to build one yourself or have someone do it for you. The advantage however of building one is that you can customize it completely to your requirements. Also, building a shed doesn't require high-level carpentry skills. All you really need is a plan, materials, and basic tools.

The first step is to determine the spot where the shed will go. This must all be planned out in advance. The amount of space available plays a big role in how big the shed can be. A permit should be acquired to ensure that you have gained approval before building in that location.

After figuring out the dimensions, the next step is to focus on the details. What style of shed is best? Where do you want the door to be located? What items are going to be stored in the shed? These are just a few questions that have to be asked. Once you know exactly what you want, then you can begin getting the shed plans. Many home improvement stores can create plans for you, if provided with a rough sketch of your shed. In addition to the plans, a list of materials will also be included.

Next, purchase all the materials and tools required for the project. Having all supplies up front means not having to get them later on.
The surface where the shed will be constructed should be as flat as possible. The first step is to lay the foundation, which could either be concrete or an a skid foundation. The latter is pretty easy and quick to build, while the former is more costly but also more stable. Therefore, the foundation you decide upon is based on budget and preference.

Gather all the materials for building the walls. Most recommend putting them together on the ground, then placing them into position. The instructions will guide you through this.

After the walls are up, the roof is the next part of the project to focus on. This includes building the trusses. Once one has been put together, it can be used as a template for the others. Your instructions again will tell you how to complete this step.

After the shingles have been put in place, then the wood can be treated. Having pressure-treated wood is critical to prevent rotting overtime. Paints, stains, and varnish are some options.
