Building An Ecohouse Using The Durisol Waste Wood Wall System

Here at EcoInhabit, we believe that with careful thought and planning, it is entirely doable to build affordable, restorative, eco house where families will thrive. Our commitment is to create living spaces that are measurably healthful as well as ecologically sound.

One of the ways we achieve that goal is with the Durisol wall system. Durisol is an insulated concrete form manufactured in Ontario from recycled materials or waste wood (100% natural lumber) bonded with Portland cement. Waste wood is essentially whatever is left on the forest floor once the higher-value wood has been harvested, as well as dead trees, sawdust and other debris from timber processing, manufacturing, construction and demolition.

Breathing Walls With Durisol

Indoor air quality has a profound effect on our health and productivity. Our homes tend to be a toxic soup of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the building materials, paints, carpets, synthetic fabrics, glues, plastics and foams that surround us. In addition, there are increasing levels of fungal growth (mould) in our buildings that are directly related to allergies and illness.

High indoor air quality can be achieved by eliminating products which off-gas (release volatile chemicals into the air), by improving ventilation, and controlling humidity. We have chosen to build primarily with the Durisol wall system in part because of its effectiveness in these areas.

Durisol wall blocks are hygroscopic they breathe. Vapour permeable, the walls absorb and release moisture quickly, thus regulating the relative humidity or moisture content of a room. No plastic vapour barrier is used in construction so there is nothing to trap moisture. The blocks dry before mould can develop. These breathable walls aid in the removal of VOCs and other toxic gases which may be in your home.

Proper ventilation enhances the effectiveness of breathing walls by quickly delivering oxygen to a room and by assisting in the removal of indoor pollutants. However, ventilation systems are costly, need energy to run, can break down and depend entirely on the ability of people to set and adjust them appropriately. The combination of breathing walls, natural ventilation (open windows) and a small mechanical ventilation system is ideal.

Durisol is also fireproof, soundproof, insulating and incredibly durable. While straw bale and straw clay are also very effective breathing walls, they are not impervious to fire, moisture and insects in the way Durisol is.

An eco house made of recycled materials is good for the earth and for the health of your family. You can all breathe a little easier, knowing the care that went into every stage of the building process.
