Building A Search Engine Optimization Strategy

By:

Building a search engine optimization strategy can be broken down into two separate areas of focus. These are on-site and off-site optimization. These two areas can include many aspects of SEO, but everything you do to improve your website or reach within and beyond the search engines falls into these categories.

On-Site Optimization

The strategy begins with the quality and structure of your site. There are a number of possible issues that can prevent a site from being indexed by the major search engines and limit your site's exposure. These include sites with excessive flash or JavaScript. Most flash elements are not visible to the engines' crawlers, bots, or spiders. Although, these elements can be very visually appealing to visitors, they can impede the sites ability to rank.

JavaScript is another concern within the architecture of the site. The scripts can be confusing and difficult to follow. An example is JavaScript navigation. The links within the navigation may not be easy to follow and limit the page that are crawled and indexed. These are just a few possible concerns with the structure of your website.

Next, you will want to begin identifying keywords that are relevant to your site and will drive quality traffic. Once these keywords are identified, there are basic edits that will need to be made. First, the title and meta tags should be edited to reflect relevant keywords about the page.

Second, the content should be edited to include unique, keyword rich information that visitors will find useful. Including target words in the H1 heading tag can also be helpful. The idea is not to manipulate the content to solely focus on specific words but to create valuable and relevant content. Keep in mind that there are many other factors and opportunities to optimize the structure and content within the website.

Off-Site Optimization

This encompasses any optimization that effects a site beyond its' own domain. Much focus is placed on quality link building, but the influence of social media is also a growing factor.

Quality link building can be manually built or come from natural linking sources. By creating quality content within your site or on other sites, other sites will want to link to and share the information. This helps to build credibility, authority, and trust with the search engines. In return, the site can rise in the result pages.

Along with link building, you also have the ability to drive traffic through social media. It is also believed that social media signals can also have an impact within organic search. With all the various strategies, reviewing the different linking opportunities with a professional can be a wise decision.
