Building A Restaurant, Leather Coasters And More

By:

When my uncle first opened up his bar and grill the whole family was completely thrilled. No one in our lineage had ever been a full fledged business owner and this was going to be huge for us. It was good for our status in the neighborhood. It was also the place I knew I would work when high school came around, at the time though I was a mere ten years old. The months leading up to the restaurant's opening were time of a lot of preparation and the whole family got involved. Our garage became the storage space for a wide variety of restaurant furniture and supplies. It was surprising to me how much you had to invest in before a restaurant even slapped a burger on the grill.

We had crates full of leather coasters, that to my young nose smelled amazing. There was other cases with menu covers and a few guest check presenters. We had leather placemats, enough to suit the arrangement of chairs at tables, as well as at the bar, with some extras to make for quick change over as people came and went. We had more than one plastic trash cans, plastic ice buckets and plastic wastebaskets, stacked in the basement. When the restaurant was finally ready to be inhabited after months of these things being in storage, we loaded up cars and drove this wide array of supplies to the restaurant.

I remember the first time I walked in that building like it was yesterday. The varnish on the wood smelled great and fresh. The ambiance of the space was something I already felt totally at home in. Within a few weeks the tables were set with leather placemats and leather coasters, and we were ready to open the doors to the community. People loved the décor, especially all the accessories that were stacked in our garage and basement. Luckily the food met and exceeded everyone's expectations as well. We were a resounding success right out of the gate. The first weeks went by swimmingly and things only got better from there. They mayor stopped by. Local folks held special events there, weddings and graduation parties. Soon after opening there was talk of expansion into the next building over to accommodate demand. We were growing quickly and things seemed to be steady.

As we expanded there was new shipments of leather coasters, leather placemats, and menu covers. The expansion helped us increase revenue and kept the business vibrant. Now, nearly twenty years later the restaurant remains. It is a neighborhood staple and it is in my family. It's a real point of pride.
