Building A City Garden? Buy Vegetable Seeds

By:

There’s a farmer in each of us, no matter where we live. Some people fled the farms for the cities, only to discover that they miss the wholesome, home-grown food you can get right out of a garden. If you have a yen to grow your own food, why don’t you buy vegetable seeds and start a small vegetable garden where you live?

Vegetable and herb gardens are becoming relatively commonplace in many urban environments. Sometimes this is called “homesteading” in the city. Others describe it as a cute little hobby. But you know what? This is serious business. Take a look at grocery and fuel prices; they’re heading in one direction, and it isn’t down. One of the best ways to prepare for the future is to buy vegetable seeds, store some of them, and plant a garden with the rest. To begin a cycle of self-sufficiency you should choose heirloom vegetable seeds that are non-hybrid and non-GMO.

Genetic modification is a double-edged sword. It has increased crop yields, saving millions from starvation. But we still don’t know what the spin-offs and side-effects might be. One thing we do know, however, is that heirloom seeds, which are the handiwork of God, rather than the product of a laboratory, reproduce after their kind, can be collected at harvest, and re-used. This is why some heirloom seed families have pedigrees stretching back into ages past. If you buy vegetable seeds of this kind, you’ll have better produce and greater self-reliance.

If you want an easy rule of thumb to help you buy vegetable seeds, just think in terms of color. The more colors are represented in your garden and on your table, the better your diet will be. Think as well of the advantages of grouping veggies together. The Indians called beans, squash, and corn the “three sisters,” because they cross-pollinated well and, taken together, offered complete nutrition. Remember, it’s best to buy vegetable seeds of every available kind, both in terms of crop rotation and optimal nutritional benefit.
