Building A Better Bunny Cake - He's Not Just For Easter Anymore!

When your two twenty-one year olds walk into the kitchen, smile, and say "That is Really Cute" and "Good Job Dad" you know that you have built the "better" bunny. Inspired they then came up with many different possible uses for the basic bunny cake design. Here are the simple steps for creating your bunny canvas.

Supplies needed for the basic bunny cake are: two round cake pans; one cake mix, any flavor; one can of frosting, white is the most versatile but any color works; several large marshmallows; a few jelly beans or a similar type of button candy; some type of fruit roll-up candy that provides a contrast to your frosting color selection; a festive base for your finished bunny body to be displayed on; one piece of construction paper that closely matches your frosting selection and finally any additional decorating items for your bunny creation.

The first step is to create your bunny body or bunny canvas. Simply follow the directions on your cake mix of choice and bake two 8" or 9" round cakes. Once they are out of the oven and have cooled, cut them exactly in half. Take two halves and set them aside; take one half of the remaining cake and slice off the rounded top to create a flat surface. Next spread several thin lines of frosting on your bunny base, this is important as it will help keep your bunny from hopping around the base. Place the single cake with the two flat sides in the middle of the two rounded cake halves that were previously set aside and frost all of the inside surfaces. Remember to keep the rounded surfaces turned to the outside to create a fluffy bunny exterior. Once all of the surfaces have been stuck together, frost the entire body of your bunny, swirling the frosting as you go.

Now decide which end of the cake is the front and which is the rear. Place a large marshmallow on the bunny's rear for his tail. Select one jelly bean for a nose and place it in the front. Slice your fruit roll-up into two 3" or 4" sections and then slice each section into bunny whiskers and place the whiskers around the nose. If using large jellybeans, slice one white bean in half to use as the two front teeth and stick them into the frosting just a little below his nose, if using smaller one's there is no cutting necessary. Next cut a large marshmallow into quarters, take two pieces and shape them into the whites for the eyes, push them into the frosting, fairly close together, just above the nose. Select one colorful jelly bean for the eye color, cut it in half and secure it on to the whites with a tiny bit of frosting. Now it is time for the ears. Cut two bunny shaped ears approximately 5" tall and push them into the frosting about an inch above the eyes. Now step back and admire your bunny!

You have now created a bunny canvas and what you do with it from here is only limited by your imagination. Some of the ideas we can up with were: love bunny, ballerina bunny, frank-in-bunny, pirate bunny, saint patty's bunny and birthday bunny. Your color of frosting and the additions beyond the basic bunny features will be how you take your simple little bunny cake canvas and turn it into your own masterpiece.
